I've loved buying local products across the board for a long time so when I started working with Rachel I was excited that this was something she was also passionate about! I think it's so important because you're supporting YOUR community, where you live. There's a cheesy ad that I've seen a few times about how buying local gives a little girl her first dance shoes and highschool students their prom dresses and suits instead of buying a billionaire another beach house. It's cheesy, but it's so true! Buying local products generally means supporting a smaller, family run business that directly impacts the people who work in the business and I love being a part of that!
(It's great for the economy too!)
When I buy local flowers, I know it's better for the environment as well because local farmers don't have to ship their flowers nearly as far, using less energy in the long run. I don't know about you but I'm always down with anything a little more eco-friendly! Not only that, because they aren't shipped halfway around the world, blooms are much more likely to last longer and arrive to you fresher and in better condition.
I'm more confident in the ethics of how local farmers treat their employees because Canada has better labour laws than a lot of the developing countries where many imported flowers are grown.
I can feel better about where my money goes when I buy from people in my area.
All those reasons aside, local flowers are also incredibly beautiful! I had no idea how many varieties are grown so close to me and there really isn't the need to buy imported flowers. Especially with greenhouses, there's a lot available year round. Obviously not everything can be done this way and sometimes there just isn't a replacement for a specific imported flower or greenery variety that can be grown in Canada and that's ok. Sometimes just making small changes when you can makes a huge difference.
I hope you feel inspired and empowered to choose local flowers whenever you get the chance!
Much love, Miriah
